Avoiding a breakdown
Breaking down is a nightmare for motorcyclists. Unlike motorists, riders have no warm car to sit in while they wait for the recovery vehicle to come to their rescue. Exposed to the elements bikers have an even greater incentive to avoid breaking down in the first place.
A basic routine of motorcycle maintenance will help reduce wear and tear making your bike safer to take out on the road and helping it hold its value. The first and perhaps most important check is your tyres. Bald tyres are a major cause of accidents and could also earn you a run in with the police.
Checking the oil is also straightforward but vital nonetheless, as is changing it on a regular basis. Taking care of the fuel tank can also help. Treating the tank regularly and not letting it run near empty will help avoid nasty repair bills and keep your ride running as it should. Always use the right fuel - saving a few pence a litre could cost you dearly in the long run.
Giving your bike a once over every now and again can also help spot any damage to the break lines or rust problems before they get too serious.
