Tourist organisation VisitScotland is looking to get more motorcyclists into Scotland to experience life on the highland roads.

A new promotion scheme is giving guidance to the tourism industry, showing them what services it can offer to improve biking holidays.

VisitScotland is working closely with the brother of Hollywood film star Ewan McGregor to launch this new initiate, which it hopes will see bikers from around the world converging on the highlands.

A website, Scotlandbybike.com, has been co-founded by Colin McGregor and experienced biker Stewart Buchanan, aiming to promote Scotland as a top destination for motorbike touring.

MP Margaret Curran, who is also backing the scheme, believes Scotland is a "fantastic country for motorbike touring".

Actor Ewan McGregor travelled around the world on a 20,000-mile motorbike journey with Charley Boorman.

Mr Boorman believes there is "no better place" to ride than Scotland.

"Ewan McGregor and I went around the globe on motorbikes but you're hard pushed to beat the freedom, scenery, history and welcome you receive touring Scotland," he said.

And he has a lot to compare it with, having spent three months riding through Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Canada and North America - with the importance of bike insurance becoming apparent in many of the countries.
