Iranian women get on their bike

Women in Iran are to be allowed to ride on a motorbike for the first time in over 25 years.

The Iran chief of traffic police has announced that it is possible for Iranian women to drive motorbikes, with full bike insurance, whilst still upholding traditional Islamic values, reports the AFP.

"It is not an offence for women to ride motorbikes and they can apply, just like men, for a driving license and ride while respecting Islamic values," said Mohsen Ansari, the chief of Iran's traffic police, according to Khorassan Daily.

Female motorcyclists were banned in 1979 following the Islamic revolution which concluded that driving a bike could mean that women were wrongly forced to reveal their body shape due to wind resistance.

Women have been able to ride as passengers on a motorcycle, as well as drive cars since the 1990s and the new announcement has been welcomed by the majority.

However, a similar ban was lifted in 2002, only to be later rejected by the authorities.
