Motorcycle helmets help save lives

If ever further evidence were needed that motorcycle helmets can help save lives one only has to look at the case of Florida.

The state legislature in America's sunshine state repealed a law that required motorcyclists to wear helmets five years ago.

As a result there has been a sharp increase in the number of fatalities caused by motorcycle accidents. Figures show that the number of riders killed between 2000 and 2003 went up by 81 per cent on the 1997 to 2000 numbers.

There was also a significant rise in the cost of providing healthcare for injured motorcyclists, highlighting the cost of not wearing a helmet.

Helmets are required to be worn by law in the UK and these statistics from across the Atlantic show why.

It also demonstrates the role that legislation can play in ensuring that people take precautions to protect themselves as they go about their business.

Many would argue that if motorcyclists do not wish to wear helmets then they should not be forced to by the state.

However, the burden that more serious injuries caused by motorcyclists not wearing protective headgear puts on the public purse, demonstrates the vested interest legislators have in ensuring that helmets are worn.

The cost of treating victims of motorcycle crashes almost doubled in less than three years after the mandatory helmet law was repealed.

Not wearing a helmet can also make it more likely that riders will have to make an insurance claim - although probably to their healthcare cover provider rather than their bike insurance company.
