MCN names Bike of the Year
The Suzuki GSX-R1000 has been named as Bike of the Year in the 50th annual Motorcycle News (MCN) Awards.
Competition for the award was stiff, but according to MCN editor Marc Potter the GSX-R was the outstanding bike on the shortlist, dominating its riders, the showroom and the racetrack.
"You know you are riding something truly special when you swing a leg over the Gixxer," said Potter. "It offers the kind of performance that sums up everything motorcycling has ever been about - exciting, scary, and fun."

He went on to say that the GSX-R had taken a "quantum leap" in performance that had allowed it to beat off competition from the other short-listed bikes including: the Kawasaki ZX-6R; Honda CBF500; Triumph Rocket 3 and Speed Triple; KTM 950SM; and BMW R1200RT, K12S and R1200GS.
Elsewhere in the awards seven times MotoGP champ Valentino Rossi took the Man of the Year award, beating the likes of James Toseland and Troy Corser.
Meanwhile the Tyre of the Year gong went to the Pirelli Dragon Super Corsa Pro.
Two special MCN Legend awards marked the 50th anniversary of the honours. Voted for by the magazine's readers they recognised the bike and rider that have moved and inspired British riders most in the last half century.
The Ducati 916 and the late great Barry Sheene took the respective awards.
