MCI appoints new president

Former transport minister David Jamieson has been appointed as the new president of the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI).

Mr Jamieson's appointment follows the retirement of outgoing president Stephen Norris who has held the post for the last five years.

A transport minister from 2001 to 2005, Mr Jamieson retired from parliament at this year's general election.

Prior to his resignation from public life he chaired the government's Advisory Group for Motorcyling and in February this year launched Europe's first government-led National Motorcycle Strategy.

Commenting on the appointment, MCI chairman, Garry Brumfitt of Harley-Davidson, said: "The industry is delighted to welcome Mr Jamieson to the MCI. As a fair-minded minister he did much to allow a sensible policy debate about motorcycling to take place during the last parliament."

"His experience and insight will be extremely valuable to the industry. The MCI board and officers look forward to working closely with Mr Jamieson during what we expect will be an extremely important presidency."

According to the MCI, European motorcycle licensing proposals and domestic legislation that threatens off-road motorcycling make this a critical time for the group and the coming months will see Mr Jamieson working on some key projects.
