Motorcyclists welcome new careless driving offence
The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) has welcomed the introduction of a new offence of Causing Death by Careless, or Inconsiderate Driving.
While the BMF praised the new legislation it also suggested that the penalties "do not go far enough".
Introduced as part of the report stage of the Road Safety Bill, the new offence carries a suggested sentence of up to five years for careless or inconsiderate driving.

The new amendments to the Road Safety Bill will apply in England, Wales and Scotland and also create a new offence of "causing death when driving while unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured", with a sentence of up to two years.
The BMF is calling for a sentence of ten years for the offence of careless driving.
BMF spokesman Jeff Stone commented: "While we support the introduction of the new offence, the problem, will be ensuring that the Crown Prosecution Service is able to run with a prosecution and persuade a jury of perhaps mainly drivers, to convict a fellow motorist who they might see as much a victim as a perpetrator."
Lobby groups have long been calling for tougher road safety laws. Spokesperson for road safety charity Brake, Aimee Bowen, said: "Changes to the system of charges and penalties for driving offences are long overdue. All too often we see killer drivers, who devastate families and communities through reckless and selfish behaviour behind the wheel, getting away with little more than a fine."
