Increase in deaths of older bikers

Motorcyclists over the age of 40 are expected to be involved in about half of all motorcycle deaths in the US this year, a new report claims.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate that around 47 per cent of motorcycle deaths will be of riders over the age of 40, and that this age group will be responsible for around 60 per cent of the yearly increase in deadly crashes.

Industry experts believe that with more money to spend, the older generations are splashing out on heavy bikes with big engines, leading to devastation when involved in accidents.

Washington State Patrol and the Department of Licensing are currently discussing refresher courses for riders and requirements to show a motorcycle license before buying a bike.

Tim Bouche, president of the cycle manufacturers' Motorcycle Safety Foundation, believes that officials should consider that over 40s make up the largest number of riders.

"It's not really saying there's a cause and effect there, or that it's a key factor," he said of the report.

"It's simply that the average rider is older and they're on larger bikes."

The Motorcycle Industry Council reports that motorcycle sales in the US have more than tripled since 1995.
