Ducati unveils retro bikes

Ducati is set to launch three bikes in the new year based on classic 1970's designs.

The Italian motorcycle manufacturer unveiled the GT1000, the PaulSmart1000LE, and the Sport 1000 in Tokyo this week.

All three are based on engineer Fabio Taglioni's original Ducati sport bike designs from thirty years ago but include modern features to enhance the riding experience.

The three bikes are all powered by the new Desmo 1000 DS engine and while the tyres may look like classic sport versions, they in fact use modern rubber compounds and radial construction techniques to greatly increase performance and safety from the originals.

The Sport 1000 has been dubbed the cafe racer of the three for its solo seat and clip on handle-bars as well as its greatly reduced weight, which are all reminiscent of attempts in the 70's to transform the look of street bikes in to race bikes.

The show was a spin-off from last month's Tokyo Motor Show and included a number of concept entries from manufacturers.

Suzuki demonstrated a six cylinder Stratosphere bike that was a throwback to the original Katana models.
