Injured biker wins award

A motorcyclist who was told by doctors he would never walk again following an accident has picked up an award from a national charity after proving medical staff wrong.

Richard Denyer, 54, from Aberystwyth in Wales received the Shaw Trust's STAR award for "pushing the boundaries".

Mr Denyer was unconscious for a month after crashing into a stone wall in Dolgellau after suffering a stroke.

Mr Denyer told the BBC of his defiance of medical opinion.

"The doctor asked me why I giggled when he told me I wouldn't walk again. I explained: 'You said won't and I'm not having that'," he said.

"I didn't do anything special. I was just determined that the accident wouldn't finish me. I just did what I had to do," he stressed.

Since the accident, Mr Denyer has taken up sailing and is working towards a yacht master qualification with the help of the Shaw Trust.

He also hopes to enjoy his passion for scuba diving again, once the doctor has passed him fit.

The trust's Annette Lester told the BBC: "Richard is the most courageous and remarkable person that I have ever had the pleasure to meet and work with."

The Shaw Trust began in 1982 and helps 40,000 disabled people in Britain each year find employment.
