Initiatives from the DfT included the National Motorcycle Strategy, two TV adverts, funding of research into traffic management measures to increase safety and the establishment of a government advisory group on motorcycles.

Craig Carey-Clinch, director of public affairs at MCI, said: "The comprehensive package of measures introduced by the DfT has helped to raise awareness of motorcycle safety among riders and non-riders which can only help to make motorcycling safer."

Mr Clinch said that the fall in the number of fatalities had been between 2003 and 2004 had been affected by the DfT's "diverse and inventive campaign", adding that it demonstrated that "working together and using a broad spectrum of activities can have an effect on road safety".

Fatalities fell by 16 per cent in the year to the end of 2004, whilst serious injuries fell by 13 per cent.
