Motorcycle industry faced with 'many opportunities'

The motorcycle industry faces several challenges in the face of the uncertain economic climate, but remains well placed to deal with the problems, an expert has said.

Craig Carey-Clinch, managing director of Rowan Public Affairs, said that powered two-wheelers still offer a practical and viable transport option.

With many Brits looking to reduce their budgets as a result of the credit crunch, motoring costs have emerged as one area where people are looking to cut back.

Motorbikes are often touted as providing a cheaper alternative to owning a car and Mr Carey-Clinch claimed that the current economic backdrop could have a silver lining for the industry.

"There are...many opportunities to position motorcycling as a publicly accepted transport mode of choice, and to defend the dynamic essence of biking in all its sporting, leisure and practical forms," he insisted.

Mr Carey-Clinch was speaking after relinquishing his role as director of public affairs at the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) in order to take on a position as managing director of Rowan Public Affairs.

His comments come after figures released by the MCI revealed that motorbike sales remain robust despite the economic downturn.

Sales of two-wheelers fell just 3.4 per cent in 2008 compared to an 11.3 per cent drop in car sales.
