Police target motorists in bus lanes

Police in Bristol are launching an operation that could help drive down the number of motorbike insurance claims in the area.

Officers are set to clamp down on drivers who persist in using bus lanes despite clear rules preventing them from doing so.

Many motorists seek to use the routes to overtake queued traffic during rush hour periods.

Following complaints from a number of concerned residents and road users, police sought to reassure locals that more would be done to tackle offenders.

Those found using the bus lanes will be handed a £30 fixed-penalty notice, with officers running a series of unannounced operations to catch drivers in the act.

Speaking ahead of the operation, neighbourhood beat manager for Redcliffe PC Nick King said: "Bus lanes can only be used by buses, taxis and motorcycles. This operation should send a clear message to other motorists that they cannot use bus lanes and anyone found to be doing so will receive a fixed-penalty notice."

While officers did not wish to fine people, such behaviour was unacceptable and could put the safety of motorbike riders and other road users at risk, he added.

Earlier this month, London's red route bus lanes were opened to motorcyclists for the first time in an attempt to cut congestion and improve road safety in the capital.
