Police issue mini-moto warning
Police in Berwick are seeking the cooperation of parents to help reduce the number of illegal riders in the town.
According to the Berwick Advertiser, officers are keen to remind people that taking to the roads without bike insurance or safety gear is a criminal offence.
Those who continue to flout the law could end up having their bikes seized and crushed.
Police reported a number of incidents involving young riders and have therefore moved to remind parents of the practicalities involved in owning the bikes.
"I would ask parents to carefully consider where their children can legally use these machines before buying them," said Inspector Martin Baylis.
Parents should be aware that the rules of the road apply to mini-motos and scooters as well as full-sized machines, he added.
"If it looks like a motorbike, rides like a motorbike and has an internal combustion engine, then it is a motorbike and comes with all the responsibilities of one," Inspector Baylis explained.
Children will therefore require full documentation and safety helmets in order to ride the vehicles legally.
The caution comes after police in Derbyshire announced a crackdown on nuisance drivers and motorcycle riders whose reckless behaviour puts others in danger.
