IAM 'encouraged' by success of drink-drive campaigns

A road safety group has praised the success of targeted drink-drive campaigns in helping to make UK roads safer.

Every year, police step up campaigns to identify and apprehend drink-drivers to help reduce the number of accidents during the festive season.

Following the release of figures for the 2008 Christmas period, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said it was encouraged by the effectiveness of such operations in improving road safety for bike insurance customers and other road users.

Police caught out more than 9,000 offenders during between December 2008 and January 2009 after breathalysing 183,000 motorists.

IAM director of research and policy Neil Greig said it was "encouraging" to see the initiatives cutting down the number of irresponsible drivers.

However, he warned that too many people are still putting the lives of themselves and others at risk by taking to the road while over the limit.

"We need more targeted enforcement all year round; safety is for life - not just for Christmas," he commented.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) issued a similar response to the figures today, with the group disappointed by the number of people who continue to drink and drive.

"This clearly demonstrates the need for the police to be out there enforcing the law," said RoSPA head of road safety Kevin Clinton.
