Police praise bikers' cooperation
Police have welcomed the cooperation of bikers in Nottinghamshire after a campaign to clamp down on illegal off-road riding.
Officers stopped 20 riders of various ages and reported that all of those involved were "fully cooperative".
The campaign was carried out to stop trespassing at Crookford Waters near Retford, following complaints from residents and farmers in the area.
Quad bikes and 4x4s were also targeted, with 32 vehicles stopped in total between the hours of 10:00 and 15:30 GMT on Sunday, January 18th.
Beat manager PC Bill Bailey informed offroaders that they are fully entitled to use the track through the woods provided they have a valid licence, MoT and bike insurance policy.
However, he revealed that it is illegal to ride in the woods, which are private land.
"I hope the operation was successful in educating these people about the law and will subsequently prevent further trespassing," he commented.
"We will definitely look to repeat the operation again in the future."
Off-road bikers appear to have been on their best behaviour in recent weeks after police in Derbyshire reported success in a similar campaign.
Officers and national park rangers met with a number of riders in the Peak District National Park, handing out leaflets to remind them to act responsibly.
