Nottinghamshire bikers get free safety packs
Supplies of free safety gear designed to help protect motorcyclists on the road are running out fast, police have revealed.
Officers in Nottinghamshire are keen to equip riders with the equipment in an attempt to cut the number of bike insurance claims and serious injuries on the roads.
Police figures show that five motorcyclists were killed in the area between January and March 2008, with a further 36 people seriously injured.
The new scheme aims to prevent a similar number of accidents taking place this year, with almost 2,000 free reflective backpacks and jackets distributed as part of a campaign to improve road safety.
Officers have stopped motorcyclists on the roads who are not wearing high-visibility clothing to hand out the gear and offer safety guidance.
The scheme has seen a positive response from bikers, but time is running out for those who have not yet picked up their safety packs, with the operation coming to an end this week.
Commenting on its success, Chief Inspector Andrew Charlton said officers were "pleased with the uptake" of the packs from bikers in the region.
"We would ask motorbikers to wear their high visibility items every time they ride their bikes, to ensure every trip is a safe one," he added.
The campaign comes after the Driving Standards Agency showcased its new Enhanced Rider Safety Scheme at Birmingham's Motorcycle Expo earlier this month.
