Bike fans dig deep in Honda charity scheme

Bike insurance holders may be looking to cut back on costs during the recession, but they still showed a willingness to dig deep for charity last month.

Honda Motorcycle division ran a carrier bag initiative at the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show in December which saw visitors donate £1 to make use of re-usable fabric branded bags.

The manufacturer raised a grand total of more than £4,000 which will go towards helping the work of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Spokesman for the charity Sarah Pyser said the organisation is "absolutely delighted" to receive the money, which will help fund its work with school children across the UK.

The scheme was developed as a means of offering visitors carrier bags that were strong enough to hold their purchases and giveaways from the NEC show while also reducing the impact on the environment.

Simon Gardiner, manager of marketing operations for Honda, said he was "really pleased" with the success of the initiative.

"It just goes to show that the motorcycling public are a big-hearted bunch who are only too willing to support a great cause," he added.

Honda is also set to appear at the MCN London Motorcycle Show, which starts today and will run until February 1st.

The firm will be showcasing a number of machines from its 2009 model range, including its new CBR1000RR Fireblade bike.
