TfL seeks to boost road safety for bikers

Transport for London (TfL) is set to seek advice from European experts in a bid to help cut the number of bike insurance claims in Britain.

As part of a drive to improve safety for motorcyclists on UK roads, the organisation is hosting a two-day summit to discuss ways to reduce the number of casualties.

TfL has also sent questionnaires to a number of local authorities, rider groups and police forces as it seeks to halve the number of fatalities on European Union roads between 2001 and 2010.

The meeting will bring together experts from London, Paris, Barcelona and Rome in an attempt to gather information and advice from across the continent.

Kulveer Ranger, the mayor of London's director of transport policy, said this would provide an "incredibly valuable opportunity".

"Ensuring motorcyclists can use the capital's roads safely is a key part of the mayor's aim of reducing congestion and emissions on London's roads by encouraging greater numbers of people to take to two wheels," he stated.

He added that the summit would also be discussing the effectiveness of the mayor's decision to allow motorcyclists to use bus lanes in the capital.

This was introduced on a trial basis at the beginning of this year in an attempt to cut congestion on London's roads.
