Two-part bike test welcomed

The announcement that a new two-part motorcycle test is to be introduced later this year has been welcomed by the Retail Motor Industry's bike training branch.

Following an industry consultation held by the Driving Standards Agency, it has been decided that the new examination should come into force in April, in-keeping with new requirements set out by the Second European Commission Driving Licence Directive.

The Motorcycle Rider Training Association (MRTA) says that the opinions of the training sector are being taken into account with regard to both the policy and practical sides of the test.

"Hopefully lessons have been learned from the largely fraught process of implementing the motorcycle aspects of the Second EC Driving Licence Directive. Although not ideal, the situation come April 2009 is probably as good as we could have hoped for," commented Kevin Bryan, chairman of the MRTA.

He went on to say that with the test being split into two modules, once a rider has passed the first part they will then be able to bank this pass, regardless of whether they fail the second part of the test or not, which may be good news for bike insurance holders hoping to take their test this year.

Under the previously proposed single examination, riders who gained one part but failed the other would have had to re-sit the whole examination again.
