Scottish bikers warned of theft risk

An Aberdeen motorcycle salesperson has called on the local police to reduce motorcycle thefts after a survey found that the crime had risen dramatically in the city.

The research, conducted by a motorcycle insurance firm, discovered that Aberdeen had risen from the 115th to the 40th worst city in Britain for thefts of motorbikes, on top of a 15.5 per cent rise in the national theft rate.

Donald Stephen, manager of Shirlaws Motorcycles in Aberdeen, told local newspapers that he had witnessed a huge rise in motorcycle theft and claimed that the police knew who was taking the motorcycles.

However, Mr Stephen added that because the culprits were often underage, authorities could do little to stop the gangs.

He called on the police to find a way to tackle the problem: "I feel there should be something done about this group. It's all very well saying they are from broken homes and all the rest of it but something has to be done to stop it."

Carole Nash's Warren Dickson said that the rate of motorcycle theft in Aberdeen was now above the British average, despite figures for motorbike crime in Scotland being relatively low.

"The fact that areas such as Aberdeen show surges of theft activity highlights the fact that there is no room for complacency," he added.
