Roads set for cash injection
Bikers who are concerned that they may end up having to claim on their bike insurance because of the state of the country's roads may be pleased to read that local highways are set to get a cash boost.
Transport minister Paul Clark has announced that an extra £66 million is to be allocated for the improvement of the UK's roads, in addition to the £2.1 billion already invested in highways maintenance.
Mr Clark said that road networks of a high quality are essential for connecting people within communities.
"This additional funding will allow local authorities to carry out improvements to important local highways, bringing benefits to all who use the roads," he added.
Among the planned enhancements are road resurfacing, flood protection, bridge maintenance and street lighting.
Practical work is set to begin in April this year, when the first £32 million will become available, while the remainder of the cash will be used from April 2010.
The announcement has been described as disappointing by some transport groups, with Warranty Direct stating that the cash set aside for the road improvements is "a drop in the ocean".
According to the firm, the UK has a national shortfall of £1 billion in funding for highways maintenance.
