London bikers 'fork out millions to park'

In addition to costs such as tax and motorcycle insurance, bikers in London have shelled out nearly £2.3 million to park in the capital, figures have shown.

The daily parking charge levied by Westminster city council was supposed to bring in £675,000 annually to pay for new spaces for bikes and improve parking, but the scheme has actually brought in millions, statistics from councillor Paul Dimoldenberg show.

Parking charges have raised £886,529 and season ticket holders have generated £388,000, but parking tickets have created the highest revenue, totalling £1 million.

Unless the scheme is scrapped, campaigners have said that they fear free parking for bikes could be stopped on a national level.

A go-slow protest was held by bikers in the capital last summer to highlight their displeasure at the new charging scheme.

In addition, the No To the Bike Parking Tax group attended Westminster all council meeting in January this year to discuss the charge.

Mr Dimoldenberg commented: "The costs of providing the extra motorbike parking bays has been well and truly paid for by motorbike owners - seven times over."

"All the extra income is simply an extra Conservative tax on motorbike owners and is totally unjustified," he added.
