Bikers 'should consider tyre safety'
A wheel safety organisation is calling upon tyre retailers to help in raising awareness of the importance of tyre safety.
As many bikers prepare for the first spring drive, TyreSafe warns that the number of wheel defects found in motorbikes that fail their MoTs is increasing every year.
It cites figures from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency as showing that the number of bike MoT failures for defective tyres has risen from 2.8 per cent in 2005-06, to 4.8 per cent in 2007-08.
"With only two patches each the size of a credit card in contact with the road, it is essential that bikers ride on correctly inflated tyres with sufficient tread depth in order to avoid causing serious accidents," commented Rob Beddis, TyreSafe chairman.
These motorcyclists could also find that by ensuring their wheels are safe, they avoid having to make a claim on their bike insurance.
Mr Beddis went on to add that the tyre trade can help bikers by encouraging them to consider the importance of bike safety.
Late last year, the organisation called upon the tyre trade to help educate motorists on the benefits of cold weather tyres.
