Scheme to increase biker safety

An initiative is to be launched later this year in Greater London with the aim of increasing the safety of young bikers.

Roy Buchanan, principle road safety officer at Sutton council has said that a scheme will be launched in April to provide young bikers with extra training after they pass their CBT motorbike test - potentially helping them avoid bike insurance claims.

The initiative will be run in conjunction with Bikewize - a motorcycle training school based in the borough that has been in operation since 1997.

"Teenage scooter riders are a real problem. Just after they pass their CBT motorbike test, they are over-confident and they take risks," he told the Sutton Guardian.

"That is why in April we are launching a campaign with Bikewize to give teenagers extra training after they have passed their CBT."

Mr Buchanan was speaking at the scene of a simulated crash, which aimed to show the public how dangerous speeding can be.

As part of the demonstration, ambulances, fire engines and police units were in attendance to make the scene as realistic as possible.

The event was held following an increase in accidents on Sutton's roads in the past couple of years.
