Somerset bikers risking more than a bike insurance claim?

Bikers in Somerset could be risking more than a claim on their motorcycle insurance as figures highlight an increase in fatalities in the region.

According to figures from the Somerset Road Safety Partnership, 29 people were killed in accidents on the county's roads in 2008, with almost half of the number being bikers, the BBC reports.

While the number of people who died on the roads fell by ten last year, the majority of riders who lost their lives were found to be riding larger bikes over 500cc.

Road safety spokesperson Dick Bowen said that even one death on the roads is too many.

"While the figures are moving in the right direction, we must remember there are still 29 families who are mourning the loss of a loved one. Changing driver attitudes and behaviour is a key factor in helping to reduce collisions and casualties on our roads," he said.

Last year, the partnership launched its Think Bike! campaign to urge drivers to look out for motorcyclists and bicycle riders.

According to figures, 75 per cent of motorcycle crashes involve a car.
