Bike safety site to be revamped

A London design consultancy has been drafted in to revamp the Department for Transport's Think! Motorcycle Academy website.

The £10,000 brief has been given to Very Studio to bring the site up to speed, ensuring that it is understandable, clear and easily accessible, bike insurance policyholders may be interested to read.

Speaking to Design Week, Very Studio director Alex Smith commented: "The majority of accidents happen with super bikes on the road, so the idea is to promote motorcycle safety, targeting this rider while opening up to a broader audience that includes the urban leisure rider."

The firm has previously worked on a helmet safety scheme for Sharp and Yamaha and as such feels that it has a good knowledge of the motorcycling sector, Mr Smith added.

Among the plans for the portal is the creation of more user-generated features, in which bike insurance customers could upload images taken at bike racing meetings, or providing a bike guru who can receive texts asking for information or advice.

"Other things we're looking at are 'top five' suggestions, which could be a five-star-rated helmet or the top five bike routes within the UK and Europe," Mr Smith said.

The government website encourages bikers to learn about ways in which they can improve their motorcycle skills, with the academy also being a sponsor of the Superbike Championship since 2004.
