Campaigning bikers glad of small victory
Bike insurance policyholders may have been among the bikers in Grimsby who are campaigning to keep motorcycle tests in the region.
The Great Coates testing centre was due to close at the end of this month as part of plans to reduce the number of test centres across the country, as the facility was said to not be practical for hosting the new test, the Grimsby Telegraph reports.
Bike insurance policyholders planning to take their test at the centre would instead have to make the journey to a multi-purpose test facility in Lincoln or Scunthorpe.
However, the Driving Standards Agency has confirmed that a two-part test will be introduced next month, meaning that at least part of the exam can remain in Grimsby.
Fergus O'Connell, vice-chairman of North East Lincolnshire Motorcycle Action Group, which petitioned for the centre to stay open, told the publication: "While this is a great result, we are still pushing to retain full testing facilities."
Meanwhile, the Worksop Guardian reports that local bikers are outraged that the testing facility in Shireoaks is set to be closed for bike tests towards the end of next month. A campaign has been launched by a local motorbike expert to keep the centre open to bikers.
