Motorcycle statistics coincide with campaign

Motorcycle insurance policyholders in Harrow, London, may be among the least likely in the capital to need to make claims on their cover for accidents.

Figures released by Transport for London (TfL) have highlighted that Harrow had the lowest number of motorbike accidents in London in 2007, with just 32 of the 4,856 collisions taking place in the area.

The organisation has released the statistics to coincide with a new campaign that warns motorists of an optical effect that could endanger more than bikers' motorcycle insurance premiums.

According to TfL, the optical effect means that the way in which the brain assesses approaching objects can cause drivers to underestimate how much space and time is needed before pulling out in front of bikes.

The spring campaign will feature television advertisements that highlight the dangers of the optical effect.

Commenting, Kulveer Ranger, the mayor of London's transport director, said: "This timely campaign demonstrates how important it is for drivers to take that extra little bit of time to ensure that, when they make a manoeuvre, they are not going to put motorcyclists at risk."

"This is one of the many ways that we will continue to bear down on accidents and make our roads safer for all Londoners," the expert added.
