Westminster bike charge battle cranks up

Opponents of the introduction of a parking tax on motorbikes and scooters in Westminster have been urged not to go ahead with protests in the capital as the two sides remain at loggerheads.

Westminster council has been planning to introduce the charge on motorbikes and scooters, which have so far been excluded from the controversial congestion charge scheme in the capital.

However, many bike insurance customers have been angered by the proposals and have joined in demonstrations protesting against the move.

Another demonstration has been planned by the No To Bike Parking Fees campaign at the end of the month, but Westminster council has now written to the organisers in charge of the campaign urging them not to go ahead with the protest ride.

"I call on you to cancel your protest ride on 31st March, which will inevitably delay Londoners seeking to go about their business, many on their journey home," the letter from the council says, according to Visordown.com.

The letter, from councillor Danny Chalkley, Westminster's cabinet member for transport, added that the actions would "disrupt many Londoners with no part to play in your protest".

According to the campaign's website, the No To Bike Parking Fees group is aiming for the "total withdrawal of all parking taxes levied on motorcyclists and scooterists and a full refund of all fees paid to date by bikers who had no other option but to pay them".
