Bikers take part in Northumberland's last egg race

Bikers in Northumberland may want to make an extra effort to attend their local Easter egg run on April 11th and 12th as it will be the county's last.

Motorbike insurance customers may be among those planning to don their leathers and participate in the charity event for what will be the final time as the Northumberland Bikers club has said that the annual event must come to an end.

The Journal reports that organisational issues and red tape are to blame for the demise of the event, which sees bikers collect Easter eggs from pubs and other premises in the area and deliver the chocolate goodies to children in hospital and elderly folk in old people's homes.

Northumberland Bikers' spokeswoman Maggie Drysdale of Choppington told the publication that the event has become "staid and tired".

She said that all sorts of risk assessments have to be carried out and many people think the organisation makes money out of the event, which is not true.

"We want to end it this year on a high and make this one of the best egg runs ever. It is very sad for us to be telling nursing homes that this will be the last time we will be doing this," she added.

The publication reports that a lack of financial support from local councils and the refusal of Northumbria Police to provide outriders for the motorbike convoys could also be partly responsible for the event's demise.

Meanwhile, motorbike insurance customers may have been among the riders who took part in the annual egg race held in Stoke on Trent on Sunday, which raised money for needy children.
