Essex youngsters to get bike track?
An academy in Witham, Essex, has outlined plans to build a motorbike track for pupils and members of the community to use.
The Witham and Braintree Times reports that New Rickstones Academy wants to create the track for motorbikes and push bikes to use as part of a long-term strategy.
Among its planned measures will be the introduction of a garage workshop on the school's site and a ring road that will help young motorcycle insurance policyholders learn about road safety.
Vice-principal at the academy Bob Pulman said that one of the aims of the Mechanics in the Community initiative is to forge strong links with local society.
Part of the scheme involves recycling old bikes and motorcycles given to the academy by police or waste authorities which can then be restored by students in the garage, helping them to gain mechanical skills.
Mr Pulman told the publication that negotiations were taking place between the educational institution and local farmers about potentially using the "enormous amount of land" behind the academy in Conrad Road as a site for the development.
In related news, a charity established in the wake of a 14-year-old motorbike rider's death has secured the installation of soft barrier protection at tracks used for British Superbike races.
