Campaigns launched to enhance biker safety
As bikers gear up for the summer, police and governments across the UK are taking action to enhance their safety on the roads.
Following the recent launch of the national government campaign that urges motorists to take longer to look for bikes as summer approaches, police have teamed up with the motorbike industry in the Scottish Highlands to launch the Around the Corner campaign.
The Southern Reporter recently claimed that as the warmer weather arrives, it brings with it an influx of bikers keen to test their skills on the challenging twists of the picturesque Borders.
March 29th saw the Around the Corner campaign instigated in Galashiels at BCG Bikes, with local road policing inspector Richard Latto among those launching the initiative.
The scheme aims to educate inexperienced bikers in riding responsibly - which could help them avoid accidents and potential motorcycle insurance claims.
Inspector Latto explained: "This campaign was developed to interact with local motorcyclists and those who visit the area each summer.
"Each year so many motorcyclists lose their lives on our rural roads. Very often the causes relate to poor rider control and inexperience."
He went on to say that police hoped to engage with bikers to encourage safe behaviour, with targets being achieved through an increase in deployment of police motorcyclists and road policing crews in the region - especially in identified motorcycle routes.
A number of other steps and campaigns have been launched recently to improve biker safety; among them is the suggestion that bikers could be made safer on the roads with the introduction of smaller crash barriers.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists conducted research last year that showed how current barriers enhance the safety of motorists in cars, but can contribute to deaths among motorcyclists.
Meanwhile, the new, two-part motorcycle test could also help make riders safer as it enables them to take part of the test in off-road conditions - enhancing their riding experience and potentially helping them avoid motorcycle insurance claims.
Additionally, the Highways Agency has launched a DVD entitled Great Roads Great Rides 2 - an interactive resource that allows the viewer to see the road from the motorcyclist's point of view and identifies for the viewer to use to accurately read the road.
Bikers may also find investing in motorcycle insurance an essential precautionary element, as cover can provide financial help in the event of an accident or offer financial rewards for safe riders who do not make claims.
