Learners forced to make dangerous trip to test centre

Inexperienced motorbike insurance customers may be among those bikers being made to take the dangerous drive from Elgin to Inverness to take their tests.

The new two-part test for motorcycles means that young riders can continue to sit the first half of the £80 assessment at the Elgin centre, but then have to travel along the notorious A96 to get to Inverness for the second part, the Press and Journal reports.

According to the publication, campaigners have said that this drive will leave those about to take their tests mentally and physically drained and make it dangerous for them to sit the exam.

Chairwoman of the Moray Motor Cycle Test Centre Action Group Elizabeth Forsyth told the newspaper that the group would continue to campaign for a local centre in Elgin for bikers to take the offroad part of their test.

"It just takes one young laddie to be going too fast and we'll have a fatality," she warned.

Earlier this month, the Grimsby Telegraph reported that bikers were campaigning to keep their local centre open so that learners would not have to travel to Lincoln or Scunthorpe to take the exam.
