Bikers protest against parking charges
Bike insurance policyholders may have been among those bikers who recently demonstrated against parking charges in London.
Around 1,000 motorcycle riders were expected to turn out in the capital earlier this week to protest against Westminster city council's trial of parking charges, 24dash.com reports.
Under the scheme, bikers can park in dedicated bays across the borough for a maximum charge of £1.50.
The protest was held to coincide with the council's policy and scrutiny committee meeting, in which the scheme was discussed.
According to the website, bike bays in the borough were oversubscribed by 150 per cent before the parking initiative was introduced.
Representatives have said that riders should join other road users and help fund improvements in the area with the charges.
The council's cabinet member for environment and transport Danny Chalkley said: "As a council we do not shy away from robust debate and we of course support people's right to protest peacefully against policies they may not agree with, but this demonstration is a complete over-reaction to what is still an experimental scheme."
According to the protest organisers, the demonstration had the backing of the British Motorcyclists Federation, Motorcycle Action Group, Motorcycle Parking, TaxPayers' Alliance and Drivers' Alliance.
