Support for calls to aid motorcycle industry

A motorbike organisation is calling upon the government to support the motorcycle industry in the same way it has helped the car market.

The Motor Cycle Industry (MCI) Association has announced its support for the call, made by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM), for similar measures introduced in the car sector to help support the bike industry during the economic crisis.

Members of the ACEM noted at that their annual general assembly in Italy that the European Commission had outlined initiatives to help the declining car industry but not the powered two-wheeler market.

Steve Kenward, MCI chief executive, stated: "The environmental and congestion-busting benefits of motorcycling are unarguable and are worthy of the same support being offered to the four-wheel market, as is an industry which employs 15,000 people, predominantly in small and medium-sized businesses and turns over more than £3 billion a year."

Recently, the MCI called upon the government to introduce a vehicle excise duty tax break for all new motorbikes and scooters to boost consumer confidence and potentially kick-start the industry.

Such a move could also help encourage sales and aid the country's goal of moving towards greener targets, the organisation claims.
