Motorbikers issued with pothole warning

Motorcyclists have been urged to be aware of the danger potholes in the road by a road safety organisation.

TyreSafe has warned that potholes can cause a sudden loss of control which can lead to accidents.

These accidents may well impact on bike insurance premiums that are offered across the country.

With the Automobile Association reporting a 300 per cent increase in accident claims due to potholes in February, the organisation has urged vigilance before many riders set off for long rides this Easter.

Stuart Jackson, TyreSafe's chairman, explained the contact between tyre and road was less with bikes than cars.

He said: "Bikers rely more on the condition of the roads than car drivers, as any uneven surfaces can be felt directly by the rider when steering and cornering."

And a deflection caused by a pothole cause biker to lose control and fall onto the road, he added.

It is believed that the harsh winter will cause Britain's roads to deteriorate further.

Water contained in tarmac can expand when the temperature drops and the resulting cracks in the road can create dangerous potholes.

TyreSafe was originally formed as the Tyre Industry Council in 1993 and claims to have helped reduce defective tyres in the UK from 20 per cent to 12 per cent.
