Bike registrations see improved performance
Last month saw an improvement in the performance of the powered two-wheeler sector, figures have shown.
Bike insurance policyholders may be pleased to read that registrations of bikes and scooters have begun to decline more slowly as the warmer weather arrives.
According to statistics from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), 16,754 powered two-wheelers were registered in March 2009, marking a fall of 1,870 compared with March last year.
The ten per cent decline is an improvement on earlier results for 2009, which saw February registrations drop by more than 25 per cent.
A combination of warm weather and new registration plates are thought to be behind the enhanced performance, the MCI suggests.
In particular, naked motorbikes have done well, with registrations improving by 1.5 per cent so far this year compared with the same period in 2008, which could have a positive knock-on effect for bike insurance policy numbers.
Supersports registrations were also up by 0.8 per cent, while the industry as a whole experienced an overall decline of 12.1 per cent during the first quarter of the year compared with the same months in 2008.
Last month, the MCI called upon the government to introduce support packages for the bike industry in the same way that the car market has received help.
