Bike industry disappointed with new road safety strategy

The government's latest road safety strategy is missing a number of measures that could help enhance the safety of bike riders, an organisation has claimed.

According to the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), the strategy - entitled A Safer Way: Consultation on Making Britain's Roads the Safest in the World - outlines some effective measures for enhancing road safety, but misses out crucial actions.

Among these overlooked opportunities is the announcement of better driver education, wider access to bus lanes for bikes, higher funding for motorcycle safety programmes like Bikesafe and urban infrastructure designed with motorcycles in mind.

But the association has said that it shares ministers' commitment to the setting of targets for improving motorcycle safety - which could in turn lead to fewer bikers having to claim on their motorcycle insurance policies.

The MCI's Sheila Rainger commented that the strategy presents "a missed opportunity to positively tackle motorcycle safety by bringing forward genuine new thinking, backed by evidence and experience".

She added that the industry has hoped for a revamped vision on road safety that would make a difference to the security of riders.

Cutting speed limits can never be a panacea when one-third of accidents are caused by the basic driver error of failure to look properly," Ms Rainger added.

Earlier this month the MCI called upon road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick to intervene with regard to the new motorcycle test, which is seeing many exam centres close and bikers having to travel further to sit their test.
