Bike firm sees sales soar
Bike insurance policyholders may be increasing in number in the Lancashire town of Blackburn, as a bike dealership reports bumper sales.
Philip Youles Motorcycles told the Blackburn Citizen that sales are surging as riders look to invest their money rather than putting it in the bank.
The firm, which specialises in Triumph motorbikes, saw like-for-like sales rise by seven per cent in the first quarter of 2009, compared with same period in 2008.
Owner Philip Youles told the publication: "The media is full of doom and gloom at the moment, but many of our customers are financially secure and they have plenty of money in the bank, which is not earning any interest at the moment."
The company's business is doing so well that it plans to open a second branch from which to sell Triumph bikes in Manchester. It currently sells scooters in the area.
Last month, the Motor Cycle Industry Association backed calls by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers for the introduction of measures to help the bike industry counter the economic downturn in the same way that the car sector has received aid.
