New courses for budding bike mechanics

Bikers who already pay for costs such as fuel and motorcycle insurance might find that a course in fixing the machines helps them to save on repair costs.

East Berkshire College has announced that it will soon offer two courses on how to maintain and repair motorbikes, which could be useful for motorcycle insurance policyholders looking to beat the credit crunch.

The options consist of the Motorcycle Institute of the Motor Industry Certificate and Motorcycle Hobby Course, with the former being suitable for those who want to become bike mechanics.

Britons with an interest in fixing their own machine could opt for the latter course, which will also teach riders how to maintain and upgrade their models.

Ian Whatsize, senior lecturer at the college, commented: "Having spent many a night in the workshops here working on my bike, I figured it would be good for other motorcycle fans to do the same and gain a qualification at the end of it."

Mr Whatsize, who rides a Triumph T T600, added that there is nothing comparable to the courses currently offered in the area.

According to the Mechanics Register, working as a bike mechanic is a fast-paced and interesting job that usually involves an apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
