Bike registrations falling at slower pace than cars

Demand for motorcycles is still stronger than demand for cars, despite falling registrations, figures have shown.

Bike insurance policyholders may be increasing in number at a faster rate than car insurance customers as statistics from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) have shown that registrations of bikes are down just 6.5 per cent.

This compares with the figure for the car industry, which saw a decline of almost a quarter in registrations during April.

Overall, the powered two-wheeler sector is down by 12.4 per cent - which is still much less of a drop than has been experienced in the car market.

Sheila Rainger of the MCIA, commented that the bike industry is showing "resilience".

"The continued popularity of the naked motorcycle and the dominance within that category of a learner-legal practical machine, suggests people are looking for multi-purpose bikes that combine fun with utility and can take the place of a second household car," she stated.

Naked style bikes, custom models and machines between 651 and 1000cc all defied the downward trend, reporting increased registrations.

According to Glass's - publisher of Glass's Guide to Motorcycle Values - many motorbike dealers are looking to rebuild stocks of used machines as availability of second-hand models becomes limited.
