Legendary bike and rider at auction event

Italian motorbike racing champion Franco Uncini is to visit a Coys auction to watch his famous Suzuki 500 XR40 go under the hammer.

The auction, which will take place in Monaco at the weekend, could be attended by hundreds of bike insurance policyholders hoping for a firsthand glimpse of the legendary bike and the rider himself.

Expected to make around 350,000 euros (£314,449), the number 13 bike was ridden to victory in the 1982 World Championship.

It is one of 16 famous motorcycles to go under the hammer at the Legende et Passion sale on May 18th.

Chris Routledge, managing director of the Coys, said: "It is one thing selling a machine which has such a fantastic history but to have the actual rider in attendance is really special and a real plus for whoever purchases the bike."

Among the other models set to be sold is a 1992 Aprilia 250 number 44 ex Jean-Michel Bayle and both the 1990 and 1991 World Championship-winning Honda 125 RSRs ex Loris Capirossi.

The Motorcycle Industry Association recently revealed that naked style bikes and machines between 651 and 1000cc have seen an increase in registrations recently, despite the economic downturn.
