Mark Williams, the liberal Democrat MP for Ceredigion, has secured a meeting with transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss the future of motorcycle testing in the region.

Mr Williams is concerned about the new test because it has been split into two modules and although the second part is available in Aberystwyth, the first part will require riders to head to either Shrewsbury or Swansea.

The MP is concerned the move could have an impact on the safety of motorcycle riders in the region, which in turn could result in motorcycle insurance premiums being increased.

"I am glad to have secured this meeting with the minister and I will be seeking urgent reassurance from him about the future provision of motorcycle testing in Ceredigion," said Mr Williams. "It is clear that our best hope for now is for a casual site in the county, but I will be asking the Minister to make a commitment about long-term provision," he added.

Mr Williams secured a debate on the matter in April, with the new system coming into force on April 27th.

The new test aims to improve the standard of road safety for motorcycle and moped riders, according to the Driving Standards Agency, which says these riders have been identified as having a high risk of injury or death.
