Bristol police look to cut bike accidents
Police in Bristol have launched a campaign to encourage motorists and in particular motorcycle riders to take more care over their driving in a bid to cut the number of accidents on the region's roads.
The Avon and Somerset Constabulary has begun Operation Take Care, which it hopes will begin to tackle the problem of injuries and deaths caused by reckless and careless driving.
Officers have been patrolling some of the region's main roads and stopping motorcycle riders to offer them tips and advice on how to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident.
The efforts could also have a positive impact on bike insurance premiums in the area, by helping to cut down on the number of claims made by local motorcycle riders caught up in accidents on the roads.
"This week's operation was a great success," said Mike Parr, acting chief inspector at the force. "We were really well received by the motorists we spoke to who all agreed that raising awareness of motorcycling and its hazards is incredibly important," he added.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised in Wales over a lack of access to motorcycle testing facilities. Ceredigion MP Mark Williams is set to meet with transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss the fact that riders attempting to take the course have to travel to Shrewsbury or Swansea to undertake the first part of the test.
