New test 'puts riders at risk' - motorcycle insurance
28 May, 2009
The new motorcycle test has been criticised for being potentially dangerous and having the ability to put bikers - and their motorcycle insurance policies - at risk.
According to the BBC, riders have been emailing in to say that a new 'swerve test' puts them at risk, as it is difficult to achieve the 50km per hour speed required, especially in wet conditions.
Since it was introduced at the end of April, the first three and a half weeks of exams saw 15 incidents take place, in which some riders were injured.
Motorcycle Action Group chairman, Paul Turner told the broadcaster: "We don't mind improvements in the test which will make for better riders, but putting people at risk during the test is ludicrous."
Meanwhile, the British Motorcyclists Federation's Jeff Stone commented that brake and swerve manoeuvres on wet surfaces can be "fraught with danger", although he added that there is no argument against the test itself.
The test has been in the media spotlight since it was first announced, with the Driving Standards Agency coming under fire for closing local testing centres and making riders travel further afield to sit their exams.
