Popular bike manufacturer Honda has launched a new 50p piece into circulation to commemorate its 50th anniversary of racing.
The first coin was struck by Honda road racer and 14-times TT winner John McGuinness in the Isle of Man, where the coin is being launched, bike insurance customers may be excited to read.
Pobjoy Mint hosted the racing champion, who was joined by Isle of Man Treasury member Alex Downie to see the coin-producing process before the rider pushed the button to strike the first coin.
"Only a few people, including the Queen, have had the experience of striking the first of a new circulatory coin so I feel quite privileged and thank Honda, the Isle of Man Treasury and Pobjoy for inviting me to do this," McGuinness commented.
Honda is also planning a range of other activities to honour its anniversary, including launching a set of stamps, releasing a previously unpublished image of the original 1959 Isle of Man TT team alongside a 2009 modern day re-enactment and producing a commemorative plaque, which will be unveiled at the TT team's garage in Onchan on June 7th.
