Roberts Junior joins Senior's Honda team

Kenny Roberts Junior is set to ride for his father's MotoGP team this year, it was announced on Wednesday.

The American former world champion will ride for his namesake's Team KR this season.

The Roberts outfit will be powered by Honda's 900cc five-cylinder RCV 211V engines, which are hoped will make the team competitive during the coming season's 17 rounds.

Roberts Junior became the first son of a champion to win a world title when he took the 500cc crown with Suzuki in 2000 but left them after a disappointing 2005 season.

Roberts Senior, who won three 500cc world titles in his time, saw his Banbury based team struggle last year, missing part of the championship after losing its engine supplier KTM.

As well as supplying the engines for Team KR, Honda is running six RCV 211V powered bikes for various Honda owned teams in MotoGP.

The company will also be supplying engines for two 250cc teams and one British Superbike outfit.

Honda is hoping to take titles in each category with the aid of young riders who are trying to make a name for themselves.

Roberts Junior will begin testing the new machine at Sepang in Malaysia next week.
