The UK motorcycle market saw a fall in sales during May as the recession continues to affect the industry, but the sector is expecting to see a strong future ahead.

According to the latest figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), 11,592 new motorcycles, mopeds and scooters were registered in May 2009, representing a 16.6 per cent dip compared to the same month in 2008.

However, the organisation said there remain reason to be optimistic over the future of the industry, particularly for its long-term health after the recession is over.

The MCIA explained 24 per cent of all new registrations were motorcycles up to 125cc, which is considered to be an important class for novice and new bike riders and suggests many will be taking out bike insurance for the first time and offers hope of the creation of a new generation of riders.

Sheila Rainger of the MCIA said the industry has a bright future ahead, pointing out that a significant advantage of riding a motorbike is the reduced costs over running a car.

"Starting with the Met Office's confident forecast of a long hot summer, and ending with the return of the controversial fuel duty escalator in September, the coming months will prove once again that there’s never been a better time to make the switch to two wheels," she explained.

Meanwhile Yamaha, which was top of the MCIA's survey in terms of new registrations during May, has unveiled its new Majesty 400 model, which it claimed will ensure every ride is a special occasion.
