Commuters who currently use their car to travel into work could make savings by travelling by motorbike instead, according to new research.

The figures, which may prompt drivers to don a helmet and take out bike insurance, have been released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) and show that 5.5 million car users could cut costs by switching to two-wheel transportation.

Survey findings included that the typical cost of commuting ranged between £11 and £20 each week. This amount increased to £50 for four per cent of the population.

Some 60 per cent of motorcycle claims, on the other hand, were found to be below £10 a week and no motorcyclist spent more than £50 during the week-long period.

Commenting on the research, Sheila Rainger, a spokesperson for the MCIA, said: "This research lifts the lid on one of biking’s best-kept secrets - two wheeled commuters aren't just saving time, they are saving money too.

"The role of the motorcycle as a commuter workhorse is often forgotten by our policy-makers, despite the fact that 65 per cent of two-wheel journeys are made for work or education."

Ms Rainger added that the association hoped National Motorcycle Week would help people realise how much "financial sense" biking was.

The MCIA has been operating for over 100 years and has more than 125 member companies.
